  122. The RCA DSS Digital Satellite System is easy and flexiable to install.
  123. You have two options: Professional installation by an authorized RCA
  124. installer or self-installation if you're handy and feel comfortable
  125. working on a ladder. Thomson Consumer Electronics recommends
  126. professional installation from the nationwide network of over 3000
  127. authorized installers. For the self-installer, your RCA dealer has a
  128. wide variety of DSS system accessories to make your installation easier.

  252. Q. - I would like to save myself some money! What is involved in the
  253.      BASIC installation of a RCA DSS System?
  254.  
  255. A. - . Mounting the dish to antenna to a solid vertical roof or frame
  256.      . Running 100 Feet of cable through a normal frame structure or
  257.        one layer of masonry
  258.      . One Television Hook-up
  259.      . One phone line hook-up or running ann extention line if phone
  260.        jack is not near the IRD
  261.      . Grounding the Dish Antenna
  262.      . Adding additional optional stand-alone receiver to additonal
  263.        room in the house if needed. (Optional)

  265. Q. - Does RCA provide a Do-It-Yourself Installation Kit with the
  266.      purchase or the DSS System?
  267.  
  268. A. - RCA offers the RCA DSS Self-Installation Kit (DKIT94) for
  269.      additional cost. RCA also offers a Chimney Mount Kit (D915) for
  270.      additional cost. Some dealers do NOT offer these kits and only
  271.      provide installation for additional cost. Make sure if you want to
  272.      do it yourself, that you ask your dealer if this is OK. You will
  273.      need the DKIT94 in order to do the install though.

  275. Q. - What kind of warranty does RCA offer on the RCA DSS?
  276.  
  277. A. - RCA only offers a standard 90 day warranty. Some dealers do offer
  278.      extended warrranty for additional cost.
  279.  
  280. Q. - What about network programming? (ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, FOX)
  281.  
  282. A. - You have three options:
  283.      (1) Use a set of rabbit ears to bring in your local stations.
  284.      (2) Add an outdoor external antenna.
  285.      (3) Continue your BASIC cable service. (This should only be in the
  286.          range of $7 to $15 per month.)

  288. Q. - Does DirecTV and USSB plan to add additional channels?
  289.  
  290. A. - Both DirecTV and USSB do plan to add additional programming.
  291.      Channels will be added over the course of time.
  292.  
  293. Q. - As of this writing how many channels are currently on line?
  294.  
  295. A. - As of this writing about 70 to 74 channels are currently on the
  296.      system. Many of them are Pay-Per-View.
  297.  
  298. Q. - Do you really have to have the system hooked to your phone line?
  299.  
  300. A. - Yes, you do. The phone hookup is necessay to serve as an audit
  301.      trail and security for the system. The built-in modem on the
  302.      satellite receiver ensures that the receiver is in the paying
  303.      customer's home to prevent piracy. It also sweeps the memory
  304.      monthly to generate a monthly bill for the subscription services
  305.      as well pay-per-view.
  306.  
  307. Q. - Is everything still on schedule?
  308.  
  309. A. - YES! DBS-1, North America's first high-powered DBS satellite was
  310.      successfully launched on December 17, 1993 which opened the road
  311.      to the Digital Skyway(tm) entertainment network. The DSS system
  312.      hardware, and DirecTV and USSB programming will be on line
  313.      beginning this April. The National "Roll Out" will begin this fall
  314.      after the launch of the DBS-2 satellite.
  315.  
  316. Q. - When will the product be distributed in foreign markets?
  317.  
  318. A. - The broadcast beam of the DBS Satellite will service the contiguous
  319.      48 initially. (The satellite footprint will not allow use of the
  320.      current DSS hardware in Hawaii or Alaska.) Expansion into foreign
  321.      markets rests with programming contracts and government regulation.
  322.      The Mexican and Canadian goverments must OK the reception of USSB
  323.      and/or DirecTV programming in their respective countries before DSS
  324.      or its programming can be sold in Mexico and Canada.

  326. Q. - Does it do any good to buy the programming before I buy my system?
  327.  
  328. A. - No, you need to have the system first. Many places sell the
  329.      programming or offer to sell the programming when you buy your
  330.      system. Currently USSB and DirecTV offer some "FREE" programming
  331.      for the first month while you have your system. Check with your
  332.      dealer about this when you buy your system. It is most likely best
  333.      to buy some programming when you get your system, so once it is
  334.      installed you can call in and they can send a hit to make you
  335.      active right away. If you fail to get some programming, once the
  336.      system is installed all you will get is a test pattren till they
  337.      make you live.
  338.  
  339. Q. - What does it cost on the average for programming?
  340.  
  341. A. - This is a hard question to answer. Depending on what services you
  342.      take will set the cost of the programming. On the average to get
  343.      what you have now on cable including some movie channels it is
  344.      going to run you about $50 to $65 per month. Diffrent programming
  345.      packages are availiable and some discount is offered if you pre-pay
  346.      your programming for the entire year. The cost is about the same as
  347.      current average cable programming.
  348.  
  349. Q. - OK, I'm SOLD! Where can I get a system?
  350.  
  351. A. - It depends... Since the national "Roll Out" has not started yet the
  352.      RCA DSS is only available in certain areas of the country. (Some of
  353.      the areas that currently have DSS as of this writing are: Jackson
  354.      Missippi, Baton Rouge LA, Alburquerque New Mexico, Little Rock
  355.      Arkansas) You can or could order or get a system from one of these
  356.      areas. Best bet is to check around in these areas. Sears and
  357.      Circuit City are dealers in these areas that sell the RCA DSS
  358.      system. Many dealers in these area will ship one to you, some will
  359.      insist that you come in and pick it up.

  361. Q. - If I get a DSS System from one of these areas and I don't live in
  362.      the area that sold me the DSS System will RCA turn it on?
  363.  
  364. A. - Yes, they have no problem with someone going to get or ordering one
  365.      from one of the market areas.
  366.  
  367. Q. - What is the picture quality really like?
  368.  
  369. A. - Not bad at all! I was surprised to be honest!! The S-Video quality
  370.      is better that the composite video of course. Better than your
  371.      average cable system, but not by that much, unless you are using
  372.      the S-Video.

  374. Q. - It is compatible with my VCR? (Can I tape from it?)
  375.  
  376. A. - Yes, no problem. Several diffrent ways you can do this. They are
  377.      covered in great detail in the manual.

  379. Q. - It is compatible with all TVs?
  380.  
  381. A. - Yes, it will work with any TV, but of course newer TVs that have a
  382.      S-Video input are the best to use. TVs that have composite inputs
  383.      will also work quite well. It will also work with a standard RF
  384.      connection if this is all you have. Best quaility will take S-Video
  385.      connection and second choice is RCA type composite inputs and third
  386.      choice will we the RF Anntenna Input.

  388. Q. - Is this a "flash in the pan" or is it something that
  389.      RCA/Thomson/USSB/DirecTV are really commited to?
  390.  
  391. A. - Well, they appear to want to make this work, but it is a little
  392.      early to tell. They do have some SERIOUS money tied up in DSS!

  394. Q. - What about a program guide for DSS?
  395.  
  396. A. - The publishers of Orbit do publish one. I have noticed that it is a
  397.      little hard to find though.
  398.  
  399. Q. - Does the dish move?
  400.  
  401. A. - No, once you aim it and get it tuned to the strongest possible
  402.      signal, you are all set.
  403.  
  404. Q. - Which system should I get?  The Deluxe or Basic?
  405.  
  406. A. - Simple... Do you ever think you might want to add a second TV in
  407.      another area of your house to the system? If the answer is YES,
  408.      then buy the Deluxe system. The Deluxe system is constructed a
  409.      little better than the Basic and has a nicer remote, but really
  410.      they are very close.

  412. Q. - If I move can the system go with me?
  413.  
  414. A. - Yes, if you move, all you have to do it re-install the system and
  415.      call in and they can put you back on line very quickly.
